Dish to activate Nagra 3 in November
Important Notice:

G3 Smart Card Exchange - Managing Your Inventory

October 8, 2008
Dear DISH Network® Retailer.

Beginning in July of this year, DISH Network launched a project to exchange old (Aladin) Smart Cards in customer receivers for new (G3) Smart Cards. As part of this process, we are sending new G3 Smart Cards directly to customers with instructions on how to complete the simple installation process. Additionally, we have started to include the new G3 Smart Cards in receivers currently being sold - so for these receivers, the G3 Smart Card exchange may not be necessary.

Support for Un-Exchanged Smart Cards is Scheduled to End in November 2008 - In November, we plan to start the process of shutting off programming to Aladin Smart Cards. Therefore, it is important that you install customers with older receivers from your inventory first in order to deplete your supply of Aladin Smart Cards. The Aladin Smart Cards in these older receivers may be exchanged for the new G3 Smart Cards after they are activated with customers and before any programming shut-offs.

First In, First Out Inventory Management - As a reminder, to help you manage your inventory and ensure your customers have the appropriate equipment, please make sure you are using a “first in, first out” (FIFO) inventory management process. A FIFO rotation of equipment means you install the receivers you received in earlier shipments before installing the receivers you received in later shipments. This will help ensure that the receivers which have the Aladin Smart Card are moved out of your stock prior to programming shut-offs.

- Please note that there will not be a process to exchange Aladin Smart Cards in receivers that remain in your inventory after October 2008, so it is important to rotate older receivers out of your inventory before November 2008.

Showroom Accounts - The G3 Smart Card exchange also applies to receivers used on showroom accounts. If you remove a receiver with an Aladin Smart Card from your showroom account and then re-activate it before exchanging the Aladin Smart Card with a new G3 Smart Card, that receiver may not be able to receive all applicable programming after November 2008.

This does not mean we are finished only that we are starting over and the games will continue. The nag3 is just a tweaked nag2

To give a rough idea of how things can move along, BV started
implementing N3 encryption on a dozen or so of it's channels about 7
weeks later than the card swap end date that BV had set as a target.

They are only just beginning and it will take a bit of time before they fully
implement. I would think they will wait and go with DN N3 implement so
that it prolongs the overall length of time N3 is fully implemented for
both providers. Which of course none of us wants to see that and it
affects all of NA.

This would do a few things. If the coders are waiting for final implement
then this would mean a tremendous wait period. This is what the prov's
want to happen and subscriptions won't be affected. So they feel they
are ahead of the game no matter how short lived it might be. They will
actually pick up thousands of new customers.

N3 needs to be broken then will come the bins. That will take time also.

DN has a huge market as compared to BV and although BV subs were
minimally affected by the card swap, DN, with a larger market, will
obviously have more affected subs based on population. So although BV
started 7 weeks later it might be a longer period for DN to get started.

So this is only a perspective that we should try and understand or accept
and a lot of patience is going to be needed to get through this. N3 is a
more dynamic encryption method than was N2 and we can expect a lot
of outages after the release of the first bins.

Let's see what happens.

The moral to the story is: Get a subscription if you don't want any interruptions. I sub to the DN HD only package with the $.01 two year deal on Cinemax. I have a sub for everything else that I want using a 4DTV receiver and a big dish. Still lots of FTA stuff available on the BUD including HD. Hook up the SV8000 to the BUD, add in a pci dvb card for the pc to get some of the new signals, like DVB-S2, and I don't miss much. Let them do what they want to do. It is a hobby, after all, isn't it.
